e911 Facts

Facts about e911 on Relay

In order to use an Internet-based relay service such as IP Relay, you must first register with a default relay provider and obtain a ten digit telephone.  You must also keep your registered location information current in the event you need to reach e911 through IP Relay.  It is important to be aware that because relay calls go through a Communication Assistant (relay operator) or an interpreter, 911 calls cannot be processed as quickly as those calls dialed directly from a TTY or standard telephone.

How to get help fast

  • If possible, dial 911 on your TTY for fastest service, or dial 911 on your phone and just leave the handset off the hook. Emergency call centers can respond more quickly when no interpreter or operator is involved.
  • Immediately after your 911 call is connected, clearly and specifically provide your full name and location information.
  • Your Communication Assistant will contact the nearest emergency response center in your area and relay your information to the dispatcher.
  • Make sure your computer is turned on and connected to the Internet to complete a web-based text . If your Internet connection is not working, dial 911 on your TTY or on your phone with the phone off the hook.
  • Make sure your pager is turned on and connected to the wireless network. If necessary, move to a location where you can get two or more bars of network coverage. If you cannot get a solid connection to the network using your pager, locate a pay-phone TTY.
