Facts about e911 on Relay

Relay If you have a 10-digit personal phone number, you can connect automatically to emergency service responders, such as fire, police, and ambulance. But it is important to be aware that because relay calls go through an interpreter of operator, 911 calls through relay cannot be processed as quickly as those placed directly through a TTY or standard phone.

How to get help fast

  • If possible, dial 911 on your TTY for fastest service, or dial 911 on your phone and just leave the handset off the hook. Emergency call centers can respond more quickly when no interpreter or operator is involved.
  • Immediately after your 911 call is connected, clearly and specifically provide your full name and location information.
  • Your Communication Assistant will contact the nearest emergency response center in your area and relay your information to the dispatcher.
  • Make sure your computer is turned on and connected to the Internet to complete a web-based text or video relay service call. If your Internet connection is not working, dial 911 on your TTY or on your phone with the phone off the hook.
  • Make sure your videophone is turned on. If you do not see the Video Interpreter, dial 911 on your TTY or on your phone with the phone off the hook.
  • Make sure your pager is turned on and connected to the wireless network. If necessary, move to a location where you can get two or more bars of network coverage. If you cannot get a solid connection to the network using your pager, locate a pay-phone TTY.
